Dinner at Danielle’s
Keith Russell
Said Spider to the Fly: ‘Welcome to my web.’
Said Fly to the Spider: ‘Could I meet you at a Fair?’
Deceiving Spider: ‘Yes, yes, affair I have in mind,
Just this once, you’ll never look back.’
Cautious Fly: ‘But what are the t’s & c’s?’
Diplomatic Spider: ‘Nothing’s certain in life, cept death & taxes.’
Conceding Fly: ‘So true.’
Sensuous Spider: ‘What lovely eyes you have.’
Flattered Fly: ‘What fantastic fangs you have.’
Seductive Spider: ‘No, no, look a little closer,
... they are gorge-us.
GOTCHA!, what’s a fair to you is fare for me.’

I came across this high stakes encounter on my passionfruit vine. I missed the trap and the end result side of it, so that gave me plenty of latitude to set the scene, build up the introduction, lure the simple and make a meal of it.
It struck me that this interpretation (personification) of nature activity has a common thread in many aspects of life – the Hunter and the Hunted, the Buyer and Seller. Not all encounters, affairs or deals are completely open; some involve the deception of the simple. The lesson - it pays to know the traps. But I shouldn’t impose negative feelings about the outcome, it is an essential element in the balance of nature.
