Spikey and Snapping Hitchhikers
Maggie Gordon
When you slow down to stop and look around, you see the true beauties of the natural world – and sometimes you can even save a life!
On a very warm and sunny afternoon trip into town on June 14th, I found myself at a literal crossroad with a snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina). Initially shocked by its presence in the middle of the country road, I was immediately humbled by its prehistoric features and large size; a true reminder of how long life on earth has existed before the interruption of humans.
Using a fallen branch from the side of the road and the strength of the turtle’s own jaws, the beautiful, spikey, and brilliant creature was safely placed on the other side, at its desired location. As guests in a world full of biodiversity, it’s always rewarding to assist or witness the harmony between wildlife and society – do your part!
